Pro Tip: Give Yourself Up to Mother Earth if You Want a Second Chance @ This Project

Chief called, he said this ain't it :(  I did a lot of reflection over break. I also didn't do a lot of shopping and did throw some things away...  But let me explain because I'm totally about to throw out some excuses.  First of all... I'm trying. And while celebrating a participation award is corny, I'm doing it anyway. Plus some of these things I've implemented every day! I use reusable bags, I bring my own Tupperware/cups, and I'm constantly doing more research to further enrich this zero waste experience! Plus I barely throw things away now and when I do, I'm aware of it.  And I just feel like that counts for something yanno?  AAAaaaand... I stopped shopping in general. I mean I still go to PCC sometimes, but mostly for snacks. I just realized that my parents are already buying food for everyone, so it just didn't make sense to buy a whole extra meal even if it is zero waste. Plus I always had le...

Week Three: Big Bummer

So... you know how when people are on a diet and sometimes they have "cheat days" in which they throw all their hard work out the window? Yea... that happened. However, instead of it lasting a day, it lasted the whole week. Am I disappointed? DUH! I was on a role! I was doing it! You saw the photos! To be honest, I was really tired of having to plan out everything I was doing, but that might be caused by my teenage laziness rather than me not wanting to save the planet.  I threw away a lot of things this week and most of it was candy wrappers, I mean the holidays are coming up. Christmas is going to be a mess. I suggested doing a zero waste Christmas at my house cause, in reality, it probably wouldn't be that hard, but my dad started teasing me and I lost motivation. So... I think that made me think that being zero waste didn't matter as much, so I started throwing more away. I have to keep reminding myself that it DOES make a difference!  I did do some re...

Week Two: Money Matters

A Look at My Week It was pretty much the same process as last week, but this time I was a bit more aware. Let me elaborate. I planned ahead and meal planned for only one person instead of a family. I decided on making salmon and roasted potatoes. On top of that, I was going to pick up a few snacks for my lunch cause I was tired of eating grapes every day. So I headed to PCC with all my reusable bags and Tupperware.  The process was exactly the same, I just got snacks from the bulk section and I wrote down their item numbers, so it was easier to check them out later. I got mixed nuts, some off-brand M&Ms, fig bars, and blueberry granola and just put them in my Tupperware.  The next thing I had to do was go to the deli section to get the salmon which was a new experience. It was really difficult as much as it was awkward. I just handed the butcher a huge Tupperware and was like "salmon please". It was more difficult later on when I was checking out,...

Week One: The Struggle

Producing zero waste is no easy feat and I've found that there is already so much I need to think about in order to make zero waste a reality in my life.  A Look at My Week On Wednesday, I went shopping and I tried to do it zero waste. I had done some research on shopping zero waste and I found that a lot of other zero waste members recommended bringing reusable bags and cans to store my items in (1).  So, I brought a bunch of reusable bags with me, and in different sizes, in case I was getting smaller items.  One thing that I didn't think I would have to worry about was where I was going to buy my food. However, the grocery store I usually go to does not have many zero waste options. A lot of the stuff there is packaged in materials that I would not be able to reuse or compost. As an alternative , I thought of my local PCC since they are known for having more zero waste options.  I also didn't anticipate how much planning needed to go into shopping. I had t...
